St. Mark’s Basilica is one of the iconic symbols of Venice: also known as “the golden Church” for the predominance of golden mosaics, the Basilica is unique in the world in the artistic and architectural panorama for its particular conformation with a strong Byzantine and Romanesque characterization, for the priceless treasures kept inside and for the refinement of the mosaics that decorate the vaults.
Among the treasures housed in the Basilica, the Pala d'Oro (the altar retable) stands out for its magnificence and uniqueness: commissioned in Constantinople in the XII century by the Doge Falier, it’s decorated with precious and refined stones and pearls set on golden enamels.
A visit to St. Mark’s Museum cannot be missed: it houses many works of art related to the Basilica, among which the iconic gilded bronze quadriga stands out. A copy of the quadriga is displayed on the loggia overlooking St. Mark’s Square in order to protect the original one from the corrosion of atmospheric agents.
Located at the top floor of the Basilica, the Museum gives visitors the chance to admire the Cathedral’s interiors from a new stunning perspective and to observe closely the marvellous golden mosaics with which the walls are decorated.
From the Museum visitors can access the famous terraces of the Basilica, from which tehy can enjoy a suggestive panoramic view of St. Mark’s Square, the island of San Giorgio, the Bell Tower and the Clock Tower.
